Feature enhancements in IBM Z OMEGAMON AI for CICS V 6.1.0 FixPack 1 release

FixPack 1 for IBM Z OMEGAMON AI for CICS 6.1.0 version is now available. The recent enhancements to IBM Z OMEGAMON AI for CICS have significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of performance monitoring to provide optimal system performance. This blog lists all the feature enhancements that are available in the FixPack release.

Real-time monitoring with Average Response Time metrics

Average response time has always been available through the CICSplex Performance Summary at the CICSplex panel. This however only showed data for completed intervals and did not respond immediately to sudden changes in activity. With the new feature enhancement, the Average Response Time for CICS and CICSplex regions is calculated based on recently completed transactions. This enhancement allows for more rapid detection of changes and real-time monitoring, ensuring that any performance issues can be identified and addressed promptly.

In the CICSplex Regions Summary workspace, the details of the average response time can be viewed by zooming in at the values in the Average Response Time column. The newly added CICS transactions today workspace displays the Transaction Count, Transaction Rate, Response Time metrics, Response Time bar graph for each interval in the last 24 hours.

Enhanced Context selection and navigation

The available CONTEXT selection is further enhanced for improved navigation and context selection. Using the C Context Selection option at the All Active CICSplexes workspace, the context can be specified to list all the active regions. Further, in the Scope panel, additional details for each region can be viewed by using the following options:

  • H Context Task History
  • S Context Region Summary
  • T Task Summary

These options allow users to easily select the desired context and review the task history for the specified context, providing ability to view the details of task history, task summary, and regions summary across multiple regions simultaneously giving a more streamlined and efficient navigation experience.

Comprehensive Transaction Wait summary

The newly added Transaction Waits tab in the Region Task Summary workspaces offers a detailed summary of the wait types for transactions. Active tasks are grouped by Transaction ID, displaying the number of tasks waiting for various wait types such as Enqueue, File, Interval, User and many others. The transaction wait details summary provides valuable insights into transaction delays, enabling users to pinpoint and address the root causes of performance bottlenecks.

Viewing long SIT parameters

For a quick summary of the SIT parameters used during the initialization of a CICS region, users can utilize the L CICS System Initialization option. The SIT parameters, along with their descriptions and values, are displayed in the CICS System Initialization table. In the Value column, long SIT values can be zoomed in to view the full details of the SIT parameter in the KCPSITP panel. This helps ensure that users have access to all necessary initialization details, facilitating better system management.

OMEGAMON CICS Global options information

A new option, G CICS Global Options, has been added to the CICS Control Functions panel. This option allows users to view details of various global options such as Global Name with dataset, Resource Limiting, Application Trace, Online Data Viewing, and several other CICS Global options. Users can place the cursor on the zoomable fields to navigate to specific CICS control functions, enhancing the overall user experience. If you zoom on the global name, you can see all the regions sharing the same member, helping you identify the scope of any changes.

Enabling OMEGAMON monitoring in CP/SM CMAS region

OMEGAMON can now be initialized in a CP/SM CMAS region to monitor tasks, collect near-term history, and trace details. However, it is important to note that the OMEGAMON monitoring agent cannot be used for Resource Limiting, Kill functions, and other Take Action commands except for the ONDV and trace controls. This feature provides additional monitoring capabilities in the CP/SM CMAS region, further enhancing the overall performance management of CICS and CICSplex regions.
