Helping Us Help You - Where in the World is my Situation Event Console?

So today we're looking at a slightly puzzling PMR. I had a customer who didn't have a Situation Event Console icon in their TEP client.

We tried changing permissions for the users, logging in as different users, trying the desktop client, web client and JWS client, all to no avail.  We confirmed that the icons for it existed on the system and all the jars were present but we simply couldn't find this thing anywhere. Frankly finding Carmen Sandiego probably would be easier!

On further investigation the customer confirmed that they had only completed the setup of the TEMS/TEPS and then enabled self-describing agent support, they did not actually have any agents installed in their environment. They then added a Linux agent to their environment, reconfigured the TEPS and the Situation Event Console came out of hiding.

In short, it appears that you won't get the SEC in your TEP client unless you have at least one OS agent installed in your environment.  This isn't something I'd seen documented anywhere so hopefully this blog will help you if you run into a similar situation with your own environments.
