Troubleshoot invalid date formats in ITP

Fri August 09, 2019 03:04 PM

Applies to: IT Planning & Financial Management

Symptom

You are unable to import date values into ITP due to invalid formatting, and are unsure of which date formats are correct.

What's going on

ITP has stringent requirements for date formatting that are more specific than other Apptio products.

Solution: Syntax

Date formats must meet the following syntax requirements:

  • Month must be represented by numeric integers. Text is invalid (i.e. "August" or "AUG").
  • Month and Day must contain 1-2 digits. All examples in this article will use the maximum of 2 digits.
  • Year must use all 4 digits (YYYY).
  • May use "-" or "/" to separate numbers in date, as long as the selected punctuation is consistent.
  • Order of Month and Day depend on your regional settings.

List of Valid Date Formats

North America International East Asia
MM-DD-YYYY DD-MM-YYYY YYYY-MM-DD
MM/DD/YYYY DD/MM/YYYY YYYY/MM/DD

Please note that you must use only one date format consistently across your entire ITP project.

Solution: Browser Language Settings

ITP pulls date format support from your browser or system settings. Find your browser in the following section, and ensure the browser settings are configured correctly.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome uses date formatting defined by the browser settings.

  1. In the Google Chrome browser, open the Chrome Menu in the upper-right corner, then click Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Advanced.
  3. Find the Languages section and click Language.
  4. Change your language settings to that your preferred language is at the top of the language order.  Your settings should save automatically. For more information, see Google's Change language documentation.

Internet Explorer & Microsoft Edge

Microsoft browsers use the date format defined in the regional settings of Windows.
  1. Open the Windows Start Menu. Search and select Date & Time Settings in System Settings.
  2. Click Additional date, time and regional settings.
  3. Click Change date, time, or number formats.
  4. Select your preferred date and time settings, then click Apply and OK.
  5. Clear your browser cookies and cache. For more information, see the instructions for Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge.

@Jonathan Wai @Rakesh Ankireddy

We are trying to setup the IT Planning format settings for a German User. The user wants the Apptio in default settings as German. The user has a laptop with default language settings as English.

The user want to see the European number format with . as 1000 separator and , as Decimal. We have tried to change the Browser and Language settings on the Laptop, apart from the Locale settings on IT Planning, but nothing seems to help change the default formatting in ITP to German.

Please suggest any workarounds.

@Rakesh Ankireddy

Hello Rakesh! I spoke with the ITP team and this is a technical issue that will be hotfixed soon. Under normal circumstances, the date format solution described above should work on all ITP pages. Apologies for the inconvenience and confusion!

@Jonathan Wai Does this not apply to Contracts tab in ITP? I changed the browser language settings as in the link but could still see the dates are in US format (MM-DD-YY) and not changed to UK format (DD-MM-YY) in Contracts tab Start Date and End Date fields.
