Perspectives are still a mystery to me.
Every now and then, a report won't work, and when we reach out to our wonderful CSM-@Gulcin Menekse-she suggests placing the data column in a perspective. Then everything works. I have learned to do it, but still...
Gulcin says that perspectives bind the column to the report, but why do I have to specify where it comes from if I drag and drop the column from the object when creating the table in the report?
Regarding formulas, I keep handy a couple of PDFs: one with the list of functions, the second with the detailed description. Yes, it's still 12.8.1, but it suits my purposes, essentially they remind me of what formulas exist or not, particularly in relation to Excel.
P.S. @Justin Kean, please keep posting these entries. You always make me think of something I don't quite know.

Over the past few months, we've gotten more great questions from our students during our Instructor lead classes. Here are the latest four, but if you're interested in having a question answered here from your classes let us know in the reply section below.
- Can I delete an unused category in Project Explorer's tables section? You can delete an unused category, but prior to deleting it, you must remove all tables that are currently within the category. Once the category is empty you can delete it.
- Can you rename a Driver in your cost modeling? When you create a driver or an allocation between model objects, you can adjust the custom name anytime. The three main places you cannot change a name is the name of a report, a project, or when creating a table.
- How do I create a perspective? Cliff Bird, Apptio Principal Instructor, has written a great post about how to create and use perspectives we definitely encourage you to read. You can find his full post here, Create custom perspectives in reports.
- Can I see a list of all the formula syntax I can use in Apptio? The Apptio Help Center has a great walkthrough of the formulas and functions for Apptio R12 and later. You can find the link here, Introduction to formulas and functions.
It's been great sharing the questions we receive in class, but we're always interested in more feedback. If you have any experience or best practices related to any of our questions please let us know below. It's one of the benefits of the Apptio Community that we get to enjoy everyone's expertise!
