Delivering DNS for the needs of SMBs

By Ben Ball posted 3 days ago

When businesses are starting out, they need DNS that “just works”.  They want their websites and applications to be available, all the time, without having to worry about it.  Since they’re probably running full speed ahead to deliver a product, they usually grasp for the cheapest, easiest to implement solution for DNS.  That’s usually a free solution like the NS1 free developer account or a basic registrar DNS solution.

These basic solutions work fine…until they don’t.  Most businesses get to a point where their DNS needs evolve beyond what a free or basic service can provide.  They need more capacity as their business starts to scale.  They need more advanced services like traffic steering to deliver a consistent user experience.  They want to connect DNS to other tools like third-party monitors so they can improve uptime and resilience.

Up to this point, IBM NS1 Connect has focused on two ends of the customer spectrum.  Free developer accounts were available for early stage businesses, and enterprise plans were available for highly sophisticated customers with advanced needs.

This left a significant gap in the middle – the stage where a start-up evolves into a small or medium-sized business (SMB).  Here at IBM we started to recognize that this group of customers has specific packaging requirements that were falling through the cracks.  These customers want more features and scale, but usually aren’t ready to go “all in” with an enterprise plan.  They’d rather use an online process to purchase DNS instead of digging into specific requirements and pricing with a sales representative.

Introducing IBM NS1 Connect Essentials

IBM is constantly listening to its customers and altering its approach.  That’s why we’re pleased to announce the launch of NS1 Connect Essentials – a package designed to meet the needs of SMBs.

NS1 Connect Essentials provides a simple, fully automated way for customers to upgrade from a free tier account or migrate from registrar DNS when they need greater scale and functionality.  It’s designed to give SMBs what they need without having to go through a complex, time-consuming sales process.

We’ve created a package of features designed to meet the needs of SMBs, including a higher monthly limit for queries and records, more Filter Chains for advanced traffic steering, and more connections to third party monitors.  Of course, NS1 Connect Essentials also includes all the features you’d expect from NS1 like our amazing API, fast DNS propagation times, built-in protections against DDoS attacks, and much more.  (You can see how the features of NS1 Connect Essentials compares against our free developer account and enterprise plans on the NS1 Connect pricing page.)

The best part about NS1 Connect Essentials is that it’s flexible.  We recognize that businesses are constantly changing, and their DNS needs to reflect those shifts.  If your monthly query volumes go over the built-in limits of the NS1 Connect Essentials package, we make it easy to add more capacity.

Ready to upgrade to NS1 Connect Essentials?  If you’re an NS1 Connect free developer account user, you can upgrade right in the portal.  If you’re new to IBM, you can purchase directly from the NS1 Connect pricing page.
