Back in May of this year, IBM unveiled the technical preview of a new generative AI-powered software development product aimed at empowering developer teams by accelerating code generation. Today, we are thrilled to announce the availability of IBM watsonx Code Assistant for two enterprise use cases: IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Red Hat Ansible Lightspeed and IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z.

By disrupting how work is being done, generative AI is ushering in a new era of IT worker productivity. This new product provides the tools to analyze, generate, transform and document code while maintaining the principles of enterprise-grade trust and privacy. Based on IBM’s Granite foundation models that include state-of-the-art large language models designed for code, the product is expected to help Developers and IT operators generate high-quality code using AI-generated recommendations based on natural language requests or existing source code.

To simplify the process of creating Ansible Playbooks, IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Red Hat Ansible Lightspeed is designed to deliver automation content recommendations. The product can generate syntactically correct and contextually relevant content using natural language requests written in plain English text, helping to scale and expand access to automation across more of the business. During the technical preview, organizations that piloted watsonx Code Assistant for Red Hat Ansible Lightspeed, obtained productivity improvements from 20-45% and generated 60% of Ansible Playbook content from AI content recommendations.

IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z* is an AI-assisted mainframe application modernization product aimed at increasing developer productivity and agility throughout the application development lifecycle. The product enables an end-to-end experience through application discovery and analysis, automated code refactoring, and COBOL to Java conversion. Developers can automatically refactor selected elements of an application and continue modernizing in COBOL, or selectively transform code to Java. Developers will then have the opportunity to to review and edit the transformed code, which can be integrated into existing applications to help maintain mainframe qualities of service and support fit-for-purpose deployment.

And this is only the beginning for watsonx Code Assistant! These are the first two use cases of watsonx Code Assistant, we plan to tune the product with additional domain-specific generative AI capabilities.
