How to use Velocity’s “Join Release” feature

By IBM DevOps Expert posted Fri April 29, 2022 05:41 PM

UrbanCode Velocity has a Release Management capability that allows a release manager to easily orchestrate releases whether they are interdependent traditional applications, or microservices which can be deployed on their own.

The image below shows the different scheduled releases. With filter option, it is easy to view specific releases for a specific window.

In a typical organization, application deployments can be pushed out immediately, scheduled, or deployed through releases. With Velocity’s “Join Release” feature, an application can participate in the upcoming release. Read on to learn how an application can join a release through Velocity.

The image below shows the pipeline view of a value stream, which has row-wise applications and column-wise environments listed. The Join Release option is available from the dropdown option against each environment label. Along with the Join Release option, there are other deployment options available in this dropdown menu, like Deploy for immediate application deployments and Schedule Deployment for scheduling a deployment. For easy identification, Deploy, Schedule Deployment and Join Release are categorized with different icons, upon selection.

The next image shows the Join Release pop-up window where all the scheduled releases will be listed. If this window doesn’t show up, create a release first. You can select one of the releases for the application to participate in. Velocity also provides flexibility to choose the appropriate application build/snapshot version from the dropdown menu.

Once the application joins a release, it will be added to the deployment plan as shown below.
