How to: Blur or redact data to share screenshots with public

Tue January 27, 2015 11:29 AM

PROBLEM

You want to ask Apptio Community members about something specific to your data tables, model configurations, or reports--but your screenshots contain sensitive financial or personnel data.

SOLUTION

Blur or black out (redact) just the sensitive sections of the screenshot, making it suitable for uploading with your Apptio Community question, discussion, or blog post.

OPTION 1: REDACT WITH MICROSOFT PAINT (WINDOWS ONLY)

OPTION 2: BLUR WITH PAINT.NET (WINDOWS ONLY)

OPTION 3: Do you use a Mac? Please edit this document to add your suggestions for redaction using Mac software.

Details of each option follow below.

Assume you're starting with this report (click to enlarge):

2.  Open Microsoft Paint (included with all Windows versions).

3.  Paste your screenshot into the canvas (CTRL + V or click Home > Paste).

Both great options, another one is Greenshot, which is an open source software which also helps refine the area you capture on a screen grab, and since all you do to you is press the "print screen" button, it's pretty intuitive.

There's a built-in image editor, which has an obfuscate function that allows you to blur things out. That, on top of quick links to attach images to the entire Microsoft Suite, Jira, and other common applications, has made me a pretty happy user.

Jing by Techsmith works well too. You have have it on your screen throughout the day.  Typically I have mine at the top of my screen so if I need to take a screenshot I just have to click on the yellow ball and take the screenshot.  To burr out data you can use the text box function and just drag it over the section of the screenshot you would like to hide.

SnagIt is also a terrific graphics editor with a few tricks to make this easy, as well:

1) select the area you would like to blur, using the selection tool

2) select the Image tab on the ribbon bar, then Blur - you can choose which level of blur you want to implement from the drop-down.  Typically 10% should be sufficient for most uses.
