The first-ever Midwest Scale User Group was held at the Big Ten Conference Center in Rosemont, IL featuring Topic Sessions on Tuesday, April 30 and a Mini-Workshop on Thursday, May 2. Presentations highlighted the new features and directions for IBM Storage Scale, the IBM Scale System, and deep dives into selected product features such as Active File Management (AFM). Customers from research universities, financial institutions, and national labs had an opportunity to connect, network, and attend sessions featuring presentations by IBM, customers, and Business Partner Sycomp.
Sessions centered around learning more about Storage Scale and catered to all levels, whether a seasoned GPFS user or just getting started.
The event kicked off with discussion of new Scale features and the Scale System roadmap, followed by a deep dive into the Scale System 6000, then AFM use cases and basics, followed by Network stability strategies and Install experiences with ESS.

Another major topic presented was Scale cluster management and upgrade strategies, showcasing what works and what doesn’t.

The remainder of the day concluded with sessions on:

  • Architecting replication with stretched-cluster vs AFM-DR
  • Scale and AI
  • Scale integration with cloud and tape
The Mini-Workshop on May 2 featured the unique opportunity to work hands-on in a Scale lab with developers.

Thank you to all of our speakers, end users, and specialists who attended on the day and Charles McClary from Indiana University Bloomington for co-creating this event with us. Also a huge thank you to @Kira Schoof who was the driving force in organizing and making this event happen.

We had a great turnout for our first Midwest Scale User Group and we look forward to seeing how much the group grows!
