 Mapping Dynamic VM's to Hypervisors

Hi all,

The problem we currently face, is that our VM's are dynamic and may move between Hypervisors. As a result, we do not have a 'Hosted On' field in our dataset.

Just wondering how others have tied VM's to their respective Hypervisors when a direct relationship does not exist.

Hello @Michael Shamsiev,
From the Hypervisor object we have 2 allocation lines, one to Servers (for the VMs we know on what Hypervisor they run) and one to an intermediate object ("Idle Hypervisors"):
The Idle Hypervisors object receives the costs for all hypervisors that in the Master Data file we mark as "idle": 


The Idle Hypervisors object has a single line item, with all the costs associated to all its contributors:


From the Idle Hypervisor, costs go to all VMs that have no host:

This approach allows us to unfold the NxM into two N:1 and 1:M links. Our R12 implementation consultant recommended we do this.
In a full drill-down I suspect it won't make a difference, but who knows...

We have some (not that many) orphan VMs, that for some reason are not linked to a hypervisor. The same is true the other way round. What we do is ship the childless hypervisors' costs to the orphan VMs. Not very elegant, but it works.
If all your VMs are orphaned, then it'll depend on the numbers. You might end up with a very large NxM allocation table, which might affect performance.
Our great CSM, @Gulcin Menekse, has written about this (in the old community).

HI @Guillermo Cuadrado,

Thanks for the reply! So in the model step when creating the allocation between the hypervisor object and server object, what values do you use map the data relationship? Do you append the Hypvervisor data to the Server Master?

And are we still able to access the archived articles in the old community?
