My client is current cascaded MGM and would like to replace current DS8884 storage with DS8A00.

I understand the best option is to replace 3 DASD at one time . but due to some reason the client would like to replace one DASD at one time.

May I know that if there any potential issue that during the phase DS8A connect DS8884 , especial DS8A mirror to DS8884 ?

Any recommendation will be very appreciated.

Sincerely Arthur Chang.

Arthur,

As a general statement, that should be fine to replicate between the DS8884 and DS8A00. There are 2 items to consider though:

  1. Make sure you check the release notes on the exact versions of microcode to ensure there is no specific issue that would be microcode dependent. It's unlikely that there will be, but always a good idea to check.
  2. The DS8A00 will be significantly more powerful than the DS8884 so if you are replicating from DS8A to DS8884, you certainly won't achieve the maximum performance of the DS8A. Like I said, it should work, but client should be aware of this. For instance, if the DS8A is the prod box with MM replication to the DS8884, client might see higher write response times than would be expected. If it is GM to the DS8884, the DS8A will be capable of overwhelming the ability of the DS8884 to offload the incoming data which might lead to higher RPO than expected.

Hello Arthur,

I understand it is supported and mainly for migration purposes: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ds8000/10.0.0?topic=mirror-interoperability-existing-previous-generations-ds8000-series

I've just migrated a customer MM setup of DS8880s to DS8A00s without problems using Multitarget MM one box at one time.
