Red Hat OpenShift 4.15 Now Available on IBM Power

By Brandon Pederson posted Tue March 19, 2024 09:00 AM

In November 2023, IBM® announced the availability of Red Hat OpenShift 4.14 on IBM® Power®, and today we are building on that to further support our clients on their modernization journeys. Red Hat OpenShift 4.15 has been released and is now available to run natively on IBM Power. This release expands on what was introduced in Red Hat OpenShift 4.14, including the introduction of Power OpenShift clusters for Multi-Architecture Compute for an even more consistent experience across different compute architectures. Highlights of this release for Power include:

Kubernetes v1.28

Kubernetes v1.28 was released in August of 2023 and is now included with this release of Red Hat OpenShift on Power. The release included 45 different enhancements with support from thousands of contributors with many different backgrounds across the open source community. Some highlights of these enhancements include changes to supported skews between control planes and node versions, recovery from non-graceful node shutdowns, source code reorganization for control plane components, and more. Learn more about Kubernetes v1.28 and get further details on all the different enhancements included in the release here.

Power OpenShift Clusters for Multi-Architecture Compute

Red Hat OpenShift 4.14, Multi-Architecture Compute was introduced for the IBM Power and IBM Z platforms, enabling a single heterogeneous cluster across different compute architectures. With the release of Red Hat OpenShift 4.15, clients can now add x86 compute nodes to a multi-architecture enabled cluster running on Power. This simplifies deployment across different environments even further and provides a more consistent management experience. Clients are accelerating their modernization journeys with multi-architecture compute and Red Hat OpenShift by exploiting the best-fit architecture for different solutions and reducing cost and complexity of workloads that require multiple compute architectures.

Installer Provisioned Infrastructure for Power Virtual Server

Installer Provisioned Infrastructure (IPI) is available in tech preview for Red Hat OpenShift on Power Virtual Server. IPI simplifies and automates deployment of Red Hat OpenShift on Power Virtual Server. Clients can go from days or weeks to provision a Red Hat OpenShift cluster down to 2 hours, drastically accelerating business outcomes. The standard OpenShift trial subscriptions may be used for deployments in Power Virtual Server. However, Power Virtual Server resource utilization would be billed during the trial period. Summary

Like with every new release of Red Hat OpenShift, we look forward to getting started quickly helping our clients modernize on Power with the latest release to achieve their IT and business objectives. With Red Hat OpenShift 4.14 and 4.15, Power clients can get more consistency and less complexity in their environments with Multi-Architecture Compute by taking advantage of a single heterogeneous cluster across different architectures.
