Subject: Regarding migration of DB2400 to cloud and MS SQL using ispirer tool
Hi,
1) For 1st case here is it accessed by referring steps mentioned in the document 'Create a Linked Server with SQL Server and your IBM i' for MS SQL server ?
if yes, then how to access the same IBM i in ORACLE and in cloud enviornment and are there some different documents to follow for this connection establishment for these databases ?
2) For the 2nd case here how can we replicate data from IBM i to 1) MS SQL server 2) ORACLE 3) CLOUD including all associated triggers, views, indexes, functions, stored procedures like 'Ispirer tool'
does it automatically there?
Thanks.

Dear Tim

The answer is blowing in the wind unless you let me know more on the purpose(s) you have in your mind behind this data migration question of yours. Let me give you some sample purposes. Some customers of mine have a core business application running in IBM i and a peripheral application running on Windows that has its own database to process in conjunction with the core app data. Remote data access from Windows to IBM i enables the peripheral app to work as it needs to read some data from IBM i to finish its work. (It has no need to update core data in IBM i.) But some other customers do not like allowing on-line data access to IBM i from Windows which is regarded as less secured environment. So, this group of customers use data replication from IBM i to Windows instead. No need for "data migration" in such cases. .
What is your case like?

More info. For importing data from DB2 for i to MS SQL Server, you should consider using Linked Server which provides an ability to access a remote database from within MS SQL Server. You connect it to Db2 for i with IBM i OLE DB Provider component which is installed from IBM i Access Client Solution Windows application package. I attach an article on Linked Server for your study.
For Oracle, a Google search indicates you can use Oracles Database Gateway for ODBC which means you need to install IBM i ODBC driver which is also installed from IBM i Access Client Solution application package (for Windows or UNIX).

Hi,
Thanks for the response here.
1.Instaling 'DB2 Connect Personal Editon' at mentioned link 'mediacenter.ibm.com/media/... ' requires DVD but my DVD drive is not working currently and evenif
it works fromwhere I will get the required CD here and Whatif I don't wish to opt for DVD option here at all any other alternative for the same purpose ?
2.Which 'data access tool or tools' I need to use specifially here if if my targetdatabase are 1) MS SQL or Oracle 2) Cloud?
Thanks

Dear Tim
Are you sure you installed and used "DB2 Connect" product? Installing DB2 Connect Personal Edition at https://mediacenter.ibm.com/media/Installing+DB2+Connect+Personal+Edition/0_o9i5te7g/33943142
>>>> does it transfer all the data present in IBM i automatically and quickly to different platform like Cloud or on MS SQL server to Oracle? <<<<<
Db2 Connect product reads the data from another instance of DB2 database and writes to another instance of DB2. If your target database is MS SQL or Oracle, then using DB2 Connect is not a prudent way to go. You need to use a data access tool that supports that particular target database product. This kind of tool needs you to specify the tables in the source system and options on how to handle compatibility. It's not automatic. As to "quickly", no one knows as it depends on how complex the source database is. For example, if you have RPG triggers associated with DB2i tables, you need to create new triggers in your target non-DB2i database as I'm sure the target DBMS does not support RPG trigger program.

Hi,
Has anyone tried migrating DB2 400 data and tables using ispirer tool(IBM DB2 AS/400 (iSeries): ODBC Connection Tuning - Ispirer Knowledge Base)
does it transfer all the data present in IBM i automatically and quickly to different platform like Cloud or on MS SQL server to Oracle?
I was testing it on PUB400 though i downloaded and installed 11.5 version (Db2 11.5 - IBM Documentation) but cannot find the 'Configuration Assistant" tool ' and unable to proceed with the 2nd step onwards here.
Could someone please advise here?
Thanks
