    Thank you for this excellent Blog. Update VIOS using HMC

    That will simplify the next update/migration process.

    You wrote "HMC will commit all previous uncommitted updates prior to installing selected update".
    W    ill fixes be uninstalled as well or will I need to uninstall them manually?

    Are VIOS fully supported that provide HA-SEA? Will HMC set the VIOS HA-SEA to standby automatically?

    chdev -dev SEA -attr ha_mode=standby

    I would also like to know more.

    Does this VIO update proactively failover the SEA, and failback on
    completion per Frank's question?

    A full list of the exact steps this upgrade performs would be most welcome.

    Does this do validation on all the client LPARs to confirm they are
    fully redundant before the VIO upgrade begins?

    This indicates there may be some validation, but the documentation is
    poor as it does NOT list what resources are checked.

    Hi Russell,

    Update of the VIOS task does not proactively failover the SEA or it does not change the HA mode. That needs to be done by the user prior to update is done by user using Prepare task.     Hi Frank,

    HMC uses "updateios" VIOS command internally to perform the Update of the VIOS. That command uninstalls the ifix. So the update using HMC will uninstall the ifixes.

    Update of the VIOS task is independent of the prepare of the VIOS of maintenance task. So update does not change the HA mode of the SEA. That needs to be done prior to VIOS Update is started. Refer to https://community.ibm.com/community/user/power/blogs/manjunath-shanbhag1/2022/04/21/prepare-vios-for-maintenance-and-other-powervm-man to know how prepare of the VIOS for maintenance can be done using HMC. The artical also has information on option how HA mode of the SEA can be changed using HMC GUI at any time. Hope this info helps. Thanks!
