Tic tac, tic tac, tic tac!

Just remember, this change is for P05 and P10 software tiers (this time).

    Thanks for the reminder.

BTW, in the US we tend to say tic toc or tic tock.  A tic tac is a popular brand of breath mint.  Offering one to someone is either an act of kindness or a sign that their breath needs some work.

    That's unfortunate.

Basically the reason stated by IBM is "because all the industry is doing so", without additional motivations... what a depth of an argumentation!

I guess IBM wants to lose its differentiating power and position itself to become "like others", wow what a strategy, at least this is their communicated reasoning ;)

Having the flexibility to choose between a permanent license or "subscription oriented" was good, having just one alternative, IMHO as a customer perspective, not so good.

I image and hope that the surplus of this "subscription based" economy we are creating will benefit engineering and be directed to bring value to customers, not only to please shareholders.

I guess it would create some distortion too, like customers with old machine in the way to finally upgrade it - I know two or three of them like that - will maybe wait and keep its permanent license a little longer...

    Well said,

it could be interesting what prices will be offered from IBM for the subscription model. Has anyone any information yet?

Of course people will keep their old machines as long as possible. With these relatively small machines there is no need to switch to newest technology. I have a customer who just purchased the new P9 machine and luckily it has a *PERM IBM i key in the license :-)

We are an ISV and we do still SELL our software to the customer. And they are lucky with it.

May be some day the software industry - the big companies - understand that subscription is not the only thing on the world. TRUST and faith are not something you can rent like a subscription. Sorry to say that IMHO IBM will loose with its IBM i software against many more modern technologies and open source. What would be necessary? Just one simple answer: make IBM i open source. May be with a "community" and some "enterprise" add ons they could still make money. But the community would make sure this piece of software will live forever and valuable addons will be developed. In the moment I'm tired to say that IBM i does not evolve or modernize as it should. IBM will never - really - never get this fixed alone.
