IBM CPU and Memory Usage Guidelines for AIX and Linux OS

    Hello everyone.

When I see the result of the nmon file (nmonchart or nmon analyser) what is the IBM guideline (%) for the use of processors?  Based on the answers I have to see the slide "CPU Utilization", am I right ?

I'm asking because I always show the first slide of the "Physical CPU" used to the sales team, because they always want to know how many processors they want to sell.

As you will see on many clients, the use of the physical processor reaches the maximum consumption of what the profile has, but the percentage of cpu utilization does not show the same information.

Is there any link or some data that I can use for recommendations to the sales team and especially to the customers?

    I will appreciate your response.

    Regards..

    Hi Juan,

It's complicated! Really, not as simple as that.

I would recommend lpar2rrd to you only I've discovered a but in it that doubles (at least) the virtual processor graph in it.

I will though, highly recommend Earl Jew's talks to the POWER VUG, especially the "Starting Tactic" and "Scrunching" talks. They can get a bit hairy though.

Also, what are you trying to sell? Who are the sales people? From your company selling hardware or from an external company trying to sell you software licences?

Hello Henrik, we are an IBM business partner. We sell the POWER with IBM i, AIX and Linux for Power equipment.
Therefore, there is a sales team that takes care of the work. And they (the sales people) ask us for performance data to be able to see the current consumption and project in the new sale the number of cores activated or not in the equipment for growth, whether of the same range or a higher range ( Now POWER9 and POWER10).
That's why the question. First, the client asks us (technical staff) how the equipment is and how the current performance is in order to buy new equipment.
My person relies on statistics with the nmon of the specific core partitions on dates of high workload and I send this same information to the sales team, obviously there is always growth and many buy a new Power, others to perform an upgrade and/or Buy another power from the same range but with more cores.
Sorry to repeat, I show the client and the sales team the information and graphs of the "physical cpu use" and not the "cpu utilization" because the graphs are different, that's why I wanted to know if there is any CPU and memory usage guideline in the logical partition as such to be able to resemble the graphs and not give incorrect information, although the two graphs have to be correct.
And I will review the lpar2rrd app.

    Thanks for answering.
