  • 1.  Exploring New Features in IBM i 7.4 and 7.5: Share Your Insights

    Posted Wed December 06, 2023 03:20 AM

Please share any useful features that have become available in IBM i 7.4 and 7.5.

I'm aware of capabilities like geospatial analysis and ZLIB, but I'm interested in learning about more practical ones. If you're familiar with any, please do share.

For instance, I've heard about the ability to retrieve previously skipped commands using the F8 key while displaying past commands with the F9 key on the 5250 command screen, and the ability to extract information from JOBLOG by specifying a username.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

For new features in IBM i 7.4 and 7.5, you should check the TR landing page found here:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/1119129

All base and later enhancements are listed there, with links to the documentation.

You should have a look at SQL services, where most of the development goes. The IBM i Services (SQL) page gives a great overview over what's available and in which IBM i release / TR.

IBM i 7.4 was mostly about DB2 Mirror and IBM i 7.5 was the boolean datatype in DB2.

What's valuable to you is very subjective - so check out the documentation mentioned above and pick the ones you like the most.

    Best regards,

    Christian

Excellent reply Christian!  Great links and good comment about subjective - spot on.

One could also check out each versions documentation about "What's new"

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.5?topic=documentation-overview-whats-new

If you want the 7.4 version change one character in the link above.  Or click on the "Change version" box.

Hello everyone, one of my favorites is the MTI_INFO table function. This function returns information about Maintained Temporary Indexes (MTIs).

In the past the DBEs was to make a lot of work to find this information, now is very easy.

    Dear Juan

Your post on MTI_INFO reminds me of a few past cases that I was involved in application performance troubleshooting. Several customers had SQL-based applications and experienced overall performance degradation which happened, after some Q & A about the case, after an IPL but improved over many hours of operation to stable decent performance. From exploring Plan Cache which indicated so many SQL statements using MTIs but very few indexes when the performance became stable, I educated the customers about impermanence of MTIs and told them to create indexes based on those MTIs to prevent future after-IPL issue.

So, this one service is a blessing for those with a lot of SQL workload in IBM i.
