I cannot for the life of me find anything else on this topic. Is there a distinction between install and upgrade in terms of function when we run chhmc --mode? I know the upgrade will upgrade to a newer code version but does install do a scratch install or attempt to install over the current HMC version?

For example, if I needed to go back a previous version without loading the recovery DVD and reapplying the Critical Console Data, can I just do:

chhmc -c altdiskboot -s enable --mode install

    to install a specific version?

    Thank you.

    Hello Yelemis,

Both options require you to use the getupgfiles command to copy the network install images over to a bootable disk partition on the HMC first.  --mode upgrade is used when there is save upgrade data, and --mode install is used when there is not.  In addition, when --mode install is used the HMC hard drive is wiped clean.  So --mode install is essentially a scratch install using the network images.

    Best regards.

Thank you for the reply Stephanie. If I do a recovery to 7.7.9 via --mode install, will the HMC load both .iso over the network automatically?

Yes, all files obtained by getupgfiles will be installed upon reboot of the HMC after issuing chhmc --mode install.
