Hello, anyone can help and tell me why my Attach Virtual Network Button for this Power 9 server is greyed out?

I have other systems under the same HMC but this button is available on them.

    Thanks

    Hi Virgile,

Yes we have virtual networks under System. This HMC with version V9r2 is not new, this Power 9 is not new either.

It has a pair of VIOS and some AIX LPars, no IBM i yet.

We are just trying to attach VLANs to the LPAR.

    Dear Adrian

    >>>> I have other systems under the same HMC but this button is available on them. <<<<

Is one of those other servers a POWER9 server? If so, compare its firmware level with the P9 server you have the issue with.  Also compare the release level of VIOS in both servers.

    >>>> Yes we have virtual networks under System. This HMC with version V9r2 is not new, this Power 9 is not new either. <<<<

To solve this issue, my guess is that upgrading the release of Power server firmware (and, perhaps, also VIOS) would be your best bet.  To save time, if I were you, I would upgrade the server firmware version first and check if the issue is addressed or not.  If not, proceed to upgrade VIOS release.

Wishing you good luck tackling the issue.

    Ok thanks Satid.

I also notice RMC connection is inactive which I think is important for AIX LPARs. I'm not completely sure.

But I will try to upgrade the firmware.

There is an IBM Technote on how to fix RMC issue: Fixing the No RMC Connection Error at  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/fixing-no-rmc-connection-error

    Hi,

From what i understand when RMC connection is not active on linux, you can't add virtual i/o card when lpar is actived. But when lpar is stopped, this is not a problem. In the two case you the button is not gray, you have an error when you add the virtual i/o card to dlpar without RMC.

May be the solution is to add Virtual i/o eth from hmc cli and see if there is an error message.

How to dlpar virtual adapters using CLI (ibm.com)

The KB is for virtual i/o FC and vSCSI but i look at the command on my hmc and i see paramater to add ethernet card.

    Regards
