  • 1.  5770-BR1 vs 5770-BR2

    Posted Fri October 18, 2024 02:00 PM
    Good morning,

27.8. 2024 IBM announced (AD24-0665) that from 1.10. 2025 will no longer support 5770-BR1 and recommends switching to 5770-BR2 (already with subscription).

What options does the customer have if he does not want to switch to 5770-BR2 and wants to stay on 5770-BR1?

Thank you in advance for the answers to the discussion.

    Hello @Milos Ruzicka,

If the customer wants to stay on 5770-BR1 then please note that customer can get standard support with BRMS subscription offering. However it depends how much will be this standard subscription cost for 5770-BR1 vs. 5770-BR2 . I would say if the price difference is not big then 5770-BR2 should be preferred as this product will contain all the latest enhancements including new BRMS GUI interface.

    Hello,

The 5770-BR1 is supported through SW Maintenance, which the customer pays primarily for the 5770-SS1 (for reporting defects and new versions). That's why the 5770-BR2 support doesn't really cost him anything. So the financial comparison of the permanent license 5770-BR1 (now actually free for him) and 5770-BR2, where he has to pay for the subscription only for BR2, is clear.

Isn't there some kind of transfer set up between 5770-BR1 and 5770-BR2?

    Thanks a lot

    Hello Milos,

The way i understand this is that the 5770-BR2 is the replacement product which is available under the subscription model seeing the direction of the IBM towards subscription model for everything going forward. There is no conversion pricing available for converting non-expiring LPPs to Subscription LPPs.

It is quite similar of what IBM has announced for IBM i Licenses. Starting 07.05.2024 if a client will buy or lease a new Power 10 server(P05 or P10 tier) then the customer can either buy new IBM i entitlements or convert IBM i non-expiring license to IBM i Subscription Term at a lower-priced Subscription Term option. Active SWMA is required on the donor IBM i non-expiring licenses in order to take advantage of the conversion pricing.

IBM has already announced that the following LPPs are not included when standard IBM i Subscription is ordered. The following LPPS are ordered separately.

    • Backup, Recovery, and Media Services (BRMS) (non-expiring 5770-BR1, or
    Subscription 5770-BR2)
    • Rational Development Studio for i (5770-WDS)
    • PowerHA SystemMirror for i (5770-HAS)
    • Cloud Storage Solutions for i (5733-ICC)
    • Db2 Mirror for i (5770-DBM)
    • Rational Developer for i (ordered via Power channel (5733-RDW) or Passport
    Advantage)
    • ARCAD Observer for IBM i (5733-AO1)
    • ARCAD RPG Converter for IBM i (5733-AC1)
    • IBM i Modernization Engine for Lifecycle Integration ("Merlin", ordered via Passport
    Advantage)

    Hello,

I guess we don't understand each other. I understand how ordering 5770-BR2 works. I am dealing with a customer who has several large Power9 machines (in P30). And many, many CPUs. Given that the 5770-BR2 product is not licensed for the entire server, but for the CPU, it is almost impossible to convince him to ditch the 5770-BR1 and switch to the 5770-BR2.

So my question is how can he continue to use the 5770-BR1 in the future. SW Maintenance, in which this product is also included, is paid fairly).

Above all, I am interested in 2 situations that will certainly occur in the future.

    1. A new version of IBM i is coming, eg V7R6. What happens at that moment?
    2. switches to a new Power10 or Power11 server. What happens at that moment?

It is a question whether IBM is even clear on which issues. I understand that her goal is to get customers to switch to the 5770-BR2, but . .

    Thanks a lot

    Hi Milos,

5770-BR2 is, according to IBM, a brand-new product, that they will be supporting from now on, and there is no other option to have them maintaining BR1 in future. Your already purchased server-based licenses are all valid and will be until you will be buying new server that you won't be able to purchase BR1 for.

In other words, as long as you have the license for BR1 and you have the hardware to run it on, it will be active and functioning as it used to, but it will receive no support from IBM.

BR2 is a subscription, core-based model they decided to go forward with and we just have to either go with it, or write in-house solutions ourselves...
