What’s the latest with Oracle DB 23ai and Power/AIX?

By Doug Bloom posted Wed May 29, 2024 02:07 PM

On May 2nd Oracle announced Database 23ai general availability in their cloud offerings and as a natural extension you might be wondering what about AIX.

In the same announcement blog, https://blogs.oracle.com/database/post/oracle-23ai-now-generally-available, Oracle indicated they will be rolling out 23ai in what we at IBM have observed is their normal release pattern: Oracle Cloud first, followed by on-premises on Linux (x86) and then Windows, and then will be followed by “other platforms rolling out over the coming months.”

Even clearer is the MOS note they updated in May, https://ibm.biz/Oracle-DB-Support-on-IBM-Power-LinuxONE, which clearly states they intend to deliver 23ai in 2024 for our 80,000 joint customers.

Oracle DB 23ai is coming to Power/AIX! While you wait, you can rest assured knowing that our Oracle and IBM teams are working together as always to ensure that 23ai is current on our platform (leveraging our latest compilers and other underpinning technology) and is optimized for execution on Power including the new 23ai vector capability.

In the meantime, since the path to Oracle DB 23ai requires upgrading via 19c, I encourage all Oracle DB/AIX users to move to 19c as soon as your business needs will allow.  For new DB workloads you will be able to start directly on 23ai.

I’ll update the community when Oracle provides a public date for general availability on AIX.
