  • 1.  zD&T Licensing

    Posted Tue January 02, 2018 04:59 AM

I'm just trying to get my head around zD&T licensing and hopefully the following is correct:

    • there are 2 types of license available:
      • GEN-1 (otherwise known as SHK licenses) which are both z1090 and z1091 and use a physical hardware token which can either be attached locally or using a remote license server
      • GEN-2 (otherwise known as LDK license) which are also both z1090 and z1091 and can be either a physical hardware token (not yet available I believe) or a software license

For the GEN-2 license and using zD&T you can use the hardware token for the Personal Edition but the software license needs to be used for other implementations. The question I have, if I have to use software licensing which it seems I do, then this requires a separate system to run the license key server, is this true?

    Thanks, Sebastian

You are correct on your last thought, but some clarification is needed for a better understandiing.

    1. zD&T uses 1091 driver.

    2. Gen-1 uses only token (USB hardware device) licenses.

    3. Gen-2 is always software based license. It requires an additional zD&T instance called License Manager (also known as license server).

    4. zD&T personal edition can use both: obtain the license from a local USB hardware devce (SHK license) or obtain the license from a remote License Manager machine (LDK license).

    5. For zD&T V11.0.x and higher, after installation process, when using software based license you need to activate GEN2 mode executing gen2_init command (https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSTQBD_11.0.0/com.ibm.zdt.zpdt.license.server.doc/topics/zpdt_ldk_sl_client_cfg.html)

    6. Please, learn more about how to configure your zD&T client instance (personal edition) at https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSTQBD_11.0.0/com.ibm.zsys.rdt.guide.activ.doc/topics/act_cfg_ldk_sl.html.

    Adilson,

thanks for clarifying that although according to the redbook:

Gen2 licenses are newer and are available in both hardware (token) form and a
    software-only (no token needed) form
. We use the term Gen2-SL for the software-only
version and Gen2-HL for the hardware (token) version when we need to distinguish the
two options. The Gen2 tokens are available in three different physical formats. Gen2
tokens (and software) will eventually supplant the Gen1 family. At the time of writing,
zPDT uses Gen2-SL licenses only for zD&T customers and is not yet using Gen2-HL
tokens. However, the zPDT GA7 and later software supports all forms of Gen1, Gen2-SL,
    and Gen2-HL.

However I am not worried about the Personal edition as this zD&T system will be hosted by a managed services provider which means it will need a software based license which in turn means a separate system for the license server which incurs more costs (2 hardware systems required.)

    Thanks,

    Sebastian
