I have raised an RFE on behalf of a client - RFE # 141285 - Additional Duration for Work Orders - sum of WOTask Durations. Here is the link to the specific RFE.
I am interested to know if other clients who are using Graphical Scheduling would find this additional attribute useful for their planners & schedulers. Here is the link to the RFE:
    https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=141285

Let me know if this is of interest and whether you would vote for this RFE?
If not how do your clients/users manage Durations of WOs and WOTasks in Scheduler?

    Cheers
    Paul.

    Hi Paul,

There is a system property you can set to update how duration at the work order is calculated based on tasks too.   If you set skd.duration.includeNonWorkingTime to 0, then only working time is included in the duration calculation.  Duration of the work order is based on when you begin working and when you finish working.  If you perform some tasks in parallel, I could see an additional field to sum up duration of tasks being helpful, but based on what definition of duration is, I don't think I would call this new field duration.   Have you explored the estimated planned labor hours as an alternative to this new field though?

You could use an Automation Script or possibly a formula to add up the duration of the tasks and populate a field at the child work order and work order level.  You could then map that new field in and display it in Graphical Scheduling.

    Hi, Lacey and Paul,

To me, Duration on workorder is the hours of (schedule finish date - schedule start date).
if all tasks are in sequential order with no gap in between, I would expect that sum of task duration to be the same as workorder duration.
But if some of the tasks are to perform in parallel, or some of the tasks are interrupted with in gap in between, it would make sense to me that sum of task durations would not be the same as workorder duration.

One of the things I note is Jobplan duration which is carried onto workorder as default does not take the sum of duration on jobplan tasks.  But as Lacey says, calculation of the duration from task breakdown can be achieved from automation scripts.  So I won't be too fussy about it.

I do get questions from Scheduler users on workorder duration, often around the terminology of duration vs effort.

What I would love to see is having both duration and effort on workorder, then it would align better to the practical work planning, like other project planning softwares.

    Cheers
    Vera
