Withdrawal of DB2 Web Query

  • 1.  Withdrawal of DB2 Web Query

    Posted Fri October 20, 2023 04:31 PM

    Hi,

We bought a license for IBM DB2 Web Query including a 3-year SWMA this year.
Does anyone know what happens now?

I guess we can continue using the product until end of SWMA, but without any form of support of course?
Is there any "money back" from IBM?

Also, I had a look at IBM Cognos Analytics and at a first glance it looks very similar to DB2 Web Query. Could Cognos be the replacement product for DB2 Web Query?

    Thanks,

    Göran Nilsson

    Dear Goran

There should be more details about this withdrawal coming out in the near future. You just wait a week or so and then do a Google search with "ibm withdraw web query". My hope is that your current Web Query SWMA may be transferred to Information Builder that is the company that originally produced Web Query codes.

As for Cognos, you can download it and try it for a free trial period (30 days?) so you can see if it serves what you want or not.  SAP Crystal Report also provides a free trial period as well. In fact many such products offer free trial period.

BTW, you can also use DB2 Web Query for as long as you want as well if you are lucky not to hit any bug that seriously affects your use of it.

    Hi Göran,

The support situation will soon be clarified. If you are a business partner there are some documents around the withdrawal of Webquery on the IBM Siesmic website.

I will spread any news in my daily newsletter about IBM i for sure as well on the Built on Power Linkedin page.

Also, if you want to discuss in Swedish, please email me torbjorn@builtonpower.com

I didn't see anything related to this in today's announcements at https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/announcements

It gets harder by the day to support IBM. I have just spent the past 18 months converting my reports over to DB2 Web Query from Cognos. Just like that all of that time and effort is wasted due to IBM's incompetency.

Jeremy, Sorry to hear this.  At Fortra, we do have the IBM based BI tool called SEQUEL.  It has been helping customers for years.  We are also big supporters of IBM i.  https://www.fortra.com/products/enterprise-data-access-software-ibm-i

    Tom,

I have some Fortra products for the IBM i. There hasn't been a meaningful update to them in years. The Windows version of the same product (for example, WebDocs) gets updates all the time. I have brought this up to Fortra many times and it falls on deaf ears. Their solution for me is to buy a Windows Server and abandon the IBM i for WebDocs. So I am not sure how big of an IBM i supporter Fortra is really. I would love to take a look at the BI product and I actually used it at another job years ago, but based on my previous experience I am avoiding Fortra products for the IBM i.

    Hello Jeremy,

We are working with CD-Invest for this situation.

They work with a product developed by them:

https://www.cdquery.com/ and Apache superset running in IBM i.

For us it's really an alternative and as you can see with all the technology running on IBM i

    Best Regards

    Robert,

After coming from Cognos, I have zero desire to go back. So when I saw that listed in the tour, I just moved on.

I'm too blessed to be stressed. I have been working with IBM for almost 30 years, so I know pain is just a built-in "feature" of the platform. Just have to call them out on their terrible decisions and move on. Nothing ever really changes though.

    Jeremy,

I've heard some people mention Cognos as a replacement for DB2 Web Query. If you were moving from Cognos to WQ, you must not have thought it was a viable solution. Can you tell me why you felt like Cognos didn't meet your needs?

The problem for me with Cognos was that I had to purchase it through my ERP vendor to make it integrate with their data and it was very expensive. Each time I wanted to make a change to the data, I had to pay them to do it on top of the monthly "support and maintenance" costs. Cognos as a standalone product would probably be better and less expensive. Also, it was just overkill for what I need to do. I basically just generate reports and distribute them through email. I don't need the dashboards, maps, graphs, etc... I did find it very cumbersome and not very intuitive, which is why I haven't thought about going back.

    Hi,

I attended the webinar "IBM Cognos Analytics and IBM i" yesterday and there were some questions regarding DB2 Web Query.
Unfortunately their message was that there isn't any trade-in or transfer offer for DB2 Web Query.

They shared a link to a Q&A that is updated on a regular basis:

Some of us in IBM i the open source community are working on getting Apache Superset to work with the iACS ODBC driver. Hang in there!

So after some quick evaluations I will be proceeding with Crystal Reports. I am accessing the IBM i using ODBC and I am creating reports on the fly and distributing them using a C# program that I will convert into a service when I am finished.

CR allows me to store the SQL query with the report template, so I have full control over the data. I can export to PDF, Excel and other formats which is primarily what I need. I can pass parameters from my C# program to the reports so that I can narrow down the data retrieved on the fly. It has all of the subtotal, grouping and field calculations that I need. In a future version of my C# program I will probably store a copy of the report in each user's home folder on the IFS as a type of archive.

Best part is the program is $495.

I'm glad to hear the name Crystal Report again as I knew this product for the fist time 25 years ago or so.  Just last month, I was involved in IBM i on-line workload performance test using the tool called Load Runner which I also knew of 20 years ago or so.  These are a few rare products that never change their names.  Many of my colleagues and customers still call their Power System + IBM i with the name AS/400  :-)

Hello, Recently talking with some friends from IBM and according to the QA document, the product will continue working since the license is perpetual. The support topic will be given for customers who have an active SWMA. Although we will not have new releases or new patches for the product.

You can find in this link some alternatives to make a migration plan to another tool.

Torbjörn - thank you for your posts.  My client's software maintenance expired on Dec 31st, 2023.  Renewal not possible with IBM.  Today they have an issue and need support for Web Query.  What are our options?   I have not seen any information regarding "new support strategy" for these clients.   Just "stay tuned" messaging for the last 2+ months.   Hoping you can share some ideas.  Thank you, Tracey

Hi Tracey, well if the MA expired there is not much to do I am afraid. As this document states https://public.dhe.ibm.com/systems/support/planning/transfer/IBM.Db2.Web.Query.for.i.FAQ.pdf "Support contracts for IBM Db2 Web Query for i can no longer be acquired for any version"

Now I would probably reach out to the Information builders  (owned by Tibco) and see if they could help. If there is a defect in the product that is. Far from sure they are willing/able to help though.

But this might be a very good reason to prioritize a project to move away from Webquery, if possible.

Tracey, now there are some good news coming out from IBM.. "Current IBM Db2 Web Query for i clients can now get ongoing support and maintenance for Db2 Web Query directly from ibi."

This is very new so maybe you didn't hear it from IBM yet, but you will soon.. the FAQ will be updated says Linda Hirsch in an email to the IBM i monthly calls audience.

In my case, Goran, my client has been running without SWMA for a month, and I suspect they would like to be back in a support model.

Any insight into the pricing structure from IBI relative to the previous pricing model from IBM for Web Query.

Our local IBM rep said that IBM will not be giving an refunds for Web Query, but they could help us get a free trial period for Cognos. It may be more than we need, but I think we will give it a try.
