What is the future of Java 8 on IBM i?

  • 1.  What is the future of Java 8 on IBM i?

    Posted Mon August 19, 2024 03:58 PM

According to the following site the End Of Service for Java 8 for all platforms, other than Z, will be April of 2025:  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/java-sdk-lifecycle-dates

IBM has announced that 7.5 will be the last release to support Java 11 but hasn't said anything about Java 8 yet.  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/668193

April 2025 will be about 3 years after 7.5 came out, 6 years after 7.4 came out, 9 years after 7.3 came out (see a pattern here?).  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/668157

Knowing Java 8's future helps us to push vendors to adopt Java 17 (or anything newer IBM may come out with).

Idea to have Navigator to start using Java 17 (or higher).

In case some would find this info useful:  apart from IBM i v7.5, Java 17 (just like Java 11) was backported/made available on IBM i v7.4 as well.

    Cheers,

    Hello Robert,

Currently, when having Java 17 installed, Navigator for I will pick this up and will run a JVM using Java 17. This is valid for both 7.4 and 7.5.
Of course it is best to be using the latest version of Nav4i. So better be current with the latest HTTP group PTF.

    Hope this helps.

    Greetings,

I am at HTTP group level 16.  Which is current.  I am not finding what you're saying to be actual practice.  Well, maybe for some Navigator but not for all.

    Hello Robert,

Navigator for I is running in the Admin1 job only. So that is using Java17.

ARE and part of what IBM Web Administration for I  can do is making the move to Nav4i, but not everything is ready yet and using Java 17 already in the current HTTP servers. In the image HTTP ARE proves my point

    Greetings

I don't want to have to pick nits here and say ADMIN2, ADMIN3, ADMIN4, ADMIN5 must not be part of Navigator for i since they are not running Java 17.

In the big picture all of the stuff on the above image needs to be upgraded to Java 17.

I've got some other stuff that was not included on that image that I'd really like to know if Java 8 is marked for death like Java 11 is so I can ding some others to get their stuff upgraded too.  I need an official statement instead of just reading tea leaves.

If you have have the latest HTTP PTF Group AND the newer versions of Java on your system (including the Java PTF Group) the 'Admin' servers will be started with the highest level of Java available on the system (so, Java 11 or Java 17) if not, they will start with Java 8.  There are a couple of servers (as you see above) that will continue to run on Java 8.  The core applications are either in the process of migrating to other places for example, the Web Admin support that run in Admin4, that function is already in flight to Navigator (runs in Admin1)  So the core request, have Navigator support  Java 17.. it does already.  As for the discussion around Java 8.  I dont have links today that will push the support past 2025.. but hoping we can have that clarity in the near term.  Bottom line, Java8 on IBM i, will be supported  past the dates talked about above.  Hoping to have more clarity soon.

    Tim,

    Thank you for that update.

I'm all for advancement.  Sometimes it just comes at a steep price.  Dropping levels of Java has usually lead to the delay of migrating to a new release of IBM i - even when IBM was in control of Domino.  This time, HCL supports Java 17 for Domino, providing you are running Domino 14.  We've not made the move to Domino 14 as that requires all clients to be 64bit and we're using some 32bit Windows APIs.  I just added upgrading those hooks to 64bit to the project list.

    Tim,

If I submit feedback on a website and I get a noreply@ reply stating something about this thread, am I allowed to share that?  Because their reply, partially with all caps for emphasis, agrees with your statements.
