What is the different between fncm & icn containers and containers in CP4BA ? can I deploy both of them in clouds(IBM,AZURE,AWS) using OCP(OpenShift container platform)?I also looking for deploying fncm & icn containers on Kubernetes cluster(by setting up) in OnPrem so please check this & advise.

we are actually using Image services and planning to move either onPerm FileNet or cloud FileNet and then  migrate documents in image services to target FileNet so in this case, what is the best option.

    thanks and regards,

    Venkat

The container images themselves are the same. The Operator for FileNet is the same. The difference is in all the additional stuff.

CP4BA includes an array of additional components and capabilities, it also includes, usually, limited-use license for OCP. The extras are things like Automation Document Processing, Automation Decision Services, Business Automation Workflow, etc., etc.

Both can be deployed anywhere (on-prem or any cloud). CP4BA is only supported on OCP as some of the additional components are not certified for vanilla Kubernetes. FNCM Containers, however, are certified for deployment on CNCF certified K8s platforms.

The big question is do you just want P8 or do you want a full-fat automation platform?

I'm more than happy to take a call with you to discuss further. Migrating from FNIS is going to be a similarly complex adventure no matter which FNCM deployment approach you choose.

    Best,

    Eric

    Hi Eric,

thanks so much for your reply.

at this moment, we are planning to setup FileNet with components - FileNet content manager, ICN and IER(IBM enterprise records) only.

so I believe I can go ahead setup p8 using CP4BA using kuberneters + Redhat OCP either on onPerm or cloud right? I would also like to know license cost between these two approaches and best among these two i mean b/w cloud & non cloud approach?

    thanks and regards,

    Venkat

    Hi Venkat,

The license cost is the same on-prem or the cloud. There is a "hyperscaler edition" available that will be lower cost but only because it excludes the limited use license for OpenShift. This is useful in the cloud if you're planning to get OpenShift via the PaaS offerings in AWS (ROSA) or Azure (ARO) instead of deploying and managing your own OpenShift cluster. Those PaaS offerings include the OpenShift licenses and so to avoid double-paying for OpenShift licenses, you'd want the hyperscaler edition of CP4BA. But if, for instance, you prefer GCP where there isn't, yet, a PaaS option for OpenShift, you would probably want the normal CP4BA license that includes OpenShift entitlement.

That said, if we zoom out to a TCO-level conversation. The people-overhead of operating OpenShift, if your organization doesn't already have a large deployment, could be high if you don't choose the PaaS offering in AWS or Azure. It's something to make sure you're considering in your logic. Those PaaS offerings are collaborations between RedHat and the Hyperscalers to provide a seamless experience and, effectively, managed support for the OpenShift layer. They are a strong value proposition.

The other big advice I'd give is to choose your database and storage carefully, especially in the cloud, to minimize ongoing cost.

    Best,

    Eric

    Hello,

As well as the additional functional components that Eric mentions (ADP, ADS, BAW, etc), the Cloud Pak also a set of foundation services; the Cloud Pak provides certificate mgmt, identity mgmt, license mgmt and more. You can read about all of this here: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cloud-paks/foundational-services/4.4. Further, Cloud Paks have undergone end to end/full stack testing and provide a complete infrastructure - an infrastructure that you have to build for yourself if you just start with a K8s environment and some FileNet images.
