Welcome to Product Potpourri Episode 9!  Over the past few months, we've gotten more great questions from our students during our Instructor-led classes.  Here are the latest four, but if you're interested in having a question answered here from your classes let us know in the reply section below.

    • Can you explain the difference between Drivers and Allocations again? It's understandable that this may be confusing for some, especially since there are two types of drivers in Apptio, Unit Drivers and Allocations. Unit Drivers bring value into a model object directly from the provided data.  Allocations take a value from one Model Object to another (Cost Source to Labor for example).  The Allocation is based on the rules, filters, weightings, and/or data relationships created as part of the allocation.  So remember that both are drivers, but one drives value from the data, and the other (Allocations) pass value from one model object to another).
    • Can an SSR report be added to a standard Apptio report collection? Currently, as of 10/29/21, this isn't part of our functionality.  You can request this functionality be added by contacting the Apptio Support group and requesting a product enhancement.
    • How can you create a hierarchical data slicer? The instructions on how to use this function can be found here, Apptio Community - Using Hierarchy Slicers.
    • How can we call up images that we can then use in our reports in Apptio? If you would like to have your company's logo to use in your reports you will need to open a case with the Apptio Support team.  They will provide you with the specifics on file type, size, and other needed information.  Once they have received the needed images they will provide links to the images you can use in an HTML command to place them in your reports.  An example of the HTML command for it would be something like this, <img src="https://logos.apptio.com/acme_corp_logo.png" width="100" height="100" style="position:absolute;top:1;right:1"></div>.

Thank you all for the great questions we receive in our classes and I hope everyone has a happy Halloween!

@Tobias Zimmermann once explained it to me with a metaphor of buckets of water: the drivers are whatever you fill the bucket with, and the allocation lines are what you do with the water.
Nice, but what does this mean? It has taken me years to grasp this, and I still struggle with the concept sometimes.

I'll ask #bill the tbm guy, he might have a good way of explaining this.

On the topic of buckets, drivers and allocations I wrote a short story where #bill the tbm guy goes through the basics (link).
