  • 1.  User unable to load package data or run reports while using google chrome

    Posted 04/20/26 12:20 PM

In 12.0.4 FP1, the package doesn't load and the user gets these 2 error messages when trying to preview or run a report. ('RSV-SRV-0040 The report server encountered an internal error. Check additional information associated with this error message. If cause of problem cannot be ascertained, increase the logging level in the IBM Cognos administration tool'

    and

'Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read properties of null (reading'_1on')
    source: URL:Port/bi/pat/_wrg.js?
    V=1748448902
    line: 6
    column: 265')

In Cognos 11.2.4, they get the error 'Module metadata request failed.'

This issue is affecting only one user and occurs only in Google Chrome. There are no issues in Microsoft Edge. The user is also able to sign in on another machine without encountering the error. The browser cache and cookies have been cleared, and Chrome has been uninstalled and reinstalled.

Has anyone else encountered this error before?

    Hi Elizabeth,

I would test the following cases:

    • Ask the user with Chrome's issues to connect from another computer (with Chrome, it would be better), and retest.
    • Try to be logged with another user (assuming Windows user) on the computer with Chrome's issue, and retest.
    • Try to start Cognos Analytics with another user when using Chrome on the same original computer, and retest.

You might be able to determine if the issue is Chrome, the computer or the user (access or right).

    Best regards,

I assume you did tell that user to delete the browser's cache?

This issue was resolved. We ended up having to complete uninstall the browser, delete the entire Chrome folder, and then reinstall the browser. After that, the user did not experience any more issues using Cognos in Google Chrome.

We've had this issue with multiple users, and it happens exclusively with Chrome.  Completely uninstalling and re-installing temporarily fixed the problem, but it came back after a few weeks.  When Chrome is the default browser, I've been having users create a desktop shortcut that opens Cognos in Edge:

Right click on your desktop and select New > Shortcut.

Change the server and domain name in the string below to the appropriate value for your installlation, then copy the entire string (including the quotation marks) and paste it into the shortcut as the location of the item.

    2.

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" "https://cognos_server.server_domain/ibmcognos/bi/v1/disp"

Click Next and give your shortcut a unique name.

    4.     Click Finish
