Is it possible to archive unstructured (non-relational) data using Optim?

    Thanks,

Yes it is possible to archive documents/attachments/files into Optim Archive Files as LOB's. We've archived over 1000 systems and approx 65% of those systems contain documents/attachments/files. It's as simple as inserting the attachments in BLOB's or *LOBS into a temp table using something like DB2 federation and then archiving that *LOB table.

But I challenge you to ask yourself,... Do you really want to consume so much of your Optim volume licensing by stuffing unstructured data into Optim AF's? Also consider the manual work to retrieve LOB archived data from Optim. It's a bit more involved compared to simple relational data.

    Hi Danny,

I see that you brought up a good point about Licensing for unstructured data. If an Application contains lot of BLOBS and considering the cost, if we are not to go with Optim, then what are our other options to archive them?

Also, let's say we have a requirement of just the Document Retention(files coming in through FTP), any recommendations or pointers on what is the best way to archive them? I am guessing we cannot use Optim here?
