My organization is new to Maximo. As a new Maximo user, I can say that Maximo can be difficult to learn; it's not a simple system.

The team that implemented my Maximo project would have done well to share (and continuously refer to) some basic documentation that explains how Maximo works -- and how records flow through OOB Maximo.

An example of "how records flow through OOB Maximo" would be:
    Work order statuses
    • What the OOB WO statuses mean
    • What happens in Maximo when you change a WO to a certain status
    • At a given status, what further status changes are allowed

That WO status documentation seems pretty decent. It would have saved us lot of time if we'd been shown docs like that while the project was being implemented.

My suggestion to anyone implementing Maximo would be to share basic documentation like that with your users early in the project -- to help them understand how records flow through Maximo. Otherwise, you might find yourself in a situation where you've implemented a complicated & expensive system, and it turns out your users don't really understand how Maximo works. :)

I'm sure most companies already do that.
Are there any other basic lists/flow docs that have been helpful in you implementations?

    Cheers.

    Hello!

I think your suggestion is a great one.  Not understanding the fundamentals of the OOB tool leaves users in the dark around why they might do what they do.  I've also found that it can cause issues because they have a pre-conceived idea of how it works and what their options are when they have a new business need.  They tend to ask for something that already fits the mold of their understanding of the system rather than asking for what they really want or need.

It would help to know what flavor of Maximo you are using and what applications you might be looking for.

    Cheers!

    Hello,
Have you looked at the Maximo training courses on the skills gateway?
    https://www.ibm.com/training/search?query=maximo

It contains a number of videos about how parts of the Maximo application work.

IBM used to publish a user guide document which may covers some of what you are looking for.
They stopped producing it around version 6.

Google provides this link to an old copy:
    https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/tividd/td/ITSerDsk/sdug621/en_US/PDF/621_mx_ug.pdf

You may find some useful content in there.
It is worth bearing in mind that the software has changed over the years and your system may have customisations that change the behaviour.
