Time-Limited Editions

  • 1.  Time-Limited Editions

    Posted Mon December 02, 2019 09:10 AM
Recently I stumbled over so called "Time-Limited" editions on the download pages (https://www-01.ibm.com/marketing/iwm/iwm/web/pickUrxNew.do?source=ifxids&transactionid=455786198), but I was not able to find any info about legal usage of these time-limited editions.

Does anybody have more info about conditions and possible applications of these editions.

Development and Test uses only for 90 days. Software stops working at the end of 90 days.

    Hi, Bernhard.
As adviced by Scott, you are not entitled to use them for production purposes.
Full explanation and details about the differences is here:

thanks, but I cannot find any hint in the linked document about restrictions of the time-limited edition. There is only the sentence "Visit the IBM Informix product trials and downloads site to download the unlimited functionality (though scalability-limited) IBM Informix Developer Edition on the platform of your choice as well as time-limited versions of other IBM Informix editions."

But Art & Scotts remarks are of some help.

We have two areas, where I would like to use the time-limited edition.

The first scenario: we are currently planning a workshop for optimizing performance of systems in our production environment, which consists of several workgroup-editions.  With the restrictions of developer edition we cannot build up a realistic scenario, so we would like to use the  time-limited edition and impose the restrictions of the workgoup edition for the workshop.

The scond scenario: we have about three to four weeks per year (during the inscription phase) where one of our systems gets slow. My impression is that these performance problems are not at all the fault of the limiations of the workgroup edition, but others in our group think that these problems are due to the limits of the WE and are happy to give Informix the fault. We are unable to set up a test scenario, which reproduces this workload. So I am tempted to use the time-limited edition during the next period.

As I understand Scotts "Development and Test uses only for 90 days. " both scenarios would be covered.

    but
    > [...] not entitled to use them for production purposes
    would exclude the second scenario.
It boils down to: Is a singular test for bottlenecks in a production environment a "production purpose" or a test?

Time Limited Edition may not be used for production for any reason. If it is, it will be considered a license violation.

Here's a couple of options for your second scenario:
    1. You could lease iReplay from Exact-Solutions to record the actual activity on your production Workgroup Edition server, then use iReplay to replay the activity on a test system that has a time-limited copy of Enterprise Edition installed that has a restored copy of the production database taken shortly before starting to record the activity.
    2. You could set up an AWS system with HCL's Informix on it. That is the same as Advanced Enterprise Edition (EE with IWA included) and do the same iReplay testing there. Not time limited, just pay-as-you-go monthly subscription.
You can learn about iReplay at www.exact-solutions.com (don't forget the dash).

Don't under estimated how powerful and useful IReplay can be in these situations - I have used on numerous occasions to get clients out of holes

    We are still on 12.10.

We cannot upgrade to 14.10 since our provider (HIS eG, see www.his.de) refuses to certify his application for 14.10.

PS: Sorry for the delay, I am working only part-time (Tue to Thu) and last week were too many things to care about :-)

Oh, and you could use an AWS subscription to HCL Informix or an IBM Informix cloud account for the performance classes as well!

The time-limited editions are for testing or evaluating that Edition in preparation for a decision to purchase a license under one of the supported license metrics for the equivalent not time-limited edition. These are not intended for any extended use and usually expire in 90 days (you can usually get an additional 90 day test license from IBM sales if needed).

If you want a "free" edition for normal use, look at the Innovator-C Edition which can be used for any purpose including production except for redistribution (for which you need a distribution license). IE is not time-limited but it is feature and resource limited. See here for a description of the non-time-limited editions: www.iiug.org/en/2019/10/08/compare-informix/
