    PTF Apply and Flashcopy

This document explains why applying PTFs in parallel with Full System Flash Copy activity is not advised.

In a full system flash copy environment, when the target LPAR IPLs, it applies any PTFs marked for apply. Some LIC PTFs experience a change in addresses that can prevent the flash copy LPAR from IPLing. The changing of addresses can be more pronounced for any hardware PTFs. The most common symptom is the IPL getting stuck in Context Rebuild.  The same scenario can occur even if the source LPAR is powered down at the time of the flash copy. The LIC PTF process does not test for proper flash copy behavior.

Our recommendation is to not mix flash copy or switching with PTF applies. Use the command APYPTF LICPGM(5770999) IPLAPY(*NO) to prevent PTFs from applying during the IPL.

NOTE:  Doing OS upgrades in parallel with a full system flash copy process is also not advised.
