Hi Larry,
Yes; this is straightforward to do in Sterling and is one of the main use cases for Sterling B2Bi.
For receiving EDI documents; create a mailbox; user account; assign SSH keys to the user account; set up a virtual root for the account to the mailbox; then setup an SFTP Server Adaptor; open up a route from external to the SFTP port (through SSP if required). The trading partner can then connect to the mailbox using SFTP and once the EDI document is in the mailbox; a routing rule can be triggered to process it and pass it on to your internal ERP.
For outbound; similar process - use the SFTP Client service components to build an BP to push the EDI documents to the trading partner; or they can connect to a mailbox and pull the documents as required.
Have a look at these links for more information about the SFTP services.

I have a request from one of our trading partners (TCI) to set up a direct SFTP connection to share EDI documents. My understanding tis that it can be done through Sterling. Has anyone had experience setting this up?
