Why AIX system backup command is slower than a TSM Selective backup command. On performing a backup of 105GB filesystem from AIX using native backup command it takes around 26 minutes. The backup device used was TS3200 Tape library with Gen4 Drive and cartridges and 4GB fiber card on systems.

Another backup executed through tivoli having a single file of 282GB takes only one hour to transmit to Tape library TS3310 having Gen3 cartridges.

So why there is so much difference in backup time when performing the backup activity from a native OS command and Tivoli backup command?

The filesystems contain different files right ? so the difference could be the size and number of the files .. its not an apples for apples comparison .. compare the same filesystem backup from scratch using back and tsm and then report back .. they will prob be very similar.

1Gbit = 128MBytes, so with TCPIP overhead call a 1Gbit link as equivalent to 100MByte link.

100MBYTE per second, with 3600 second in an hour gives a throughput of 351GByte an hour.
