  • 1.  Scratch Installation of IBMi from VIOS

    Hello Team,

    We brought a new Power10 machine and now trying to install the LIC and OS from VIOS but unfortunately we are encountering the issue during the installation. LIC is installed and during the OS installation it prompted for the next volume we have loaded the Bgroup 1 volume and proceeded with the installation but looks like the installation didn't go well and when we rebooted the server from HMC we were able to login but it was showing below screen in GO LICPGM option 50. Can you please assist me with the installation of LIC and OS from VIOS using the images.
    Also do we need to load volumes one after the other manually to VIOS Optical Device or do we have a way to load all at once so that it will take the volumes one after the automatically ?

    Hi Suresh,

     Check GO LICPGM   option 10 for installed programs. I suspect that you didn't finish the installation – some things could be in BACKLEVEL status, press F11 to display it. After installing all options that you need don't forget to change, in HMC, the IPL side from A a to B and the IPL mode to Normal. Then you can/should install PTFs.

    Dear Suresh

    You can continue installation of IBM i OS by going to DST menu (Dedicated Services Tool) from 5250 console session. This is done by, in HMC and with a 5250 console session opened in your PC, setting IBM i LPAR parameter named "Keylock Position" from Normal to Manual and then restart the LPAR from HMC and look for DST menu in the console session.  From DST menu, you will see a menu option for Install Operating System.  (After you get the DST Menu, remember to change Keylock Position parameter of IBM i LPATR back to Normal.) 

    To avoid the manual action of changing to a different install image file one at a time, you can configure VIOS's Virtual Optical Media and assign it to IBM i LPAR and put all IBM i install image files in there (VIOS directory assigned to vOptical Media). Then you may also need to specify the Alternate Install Device to what IBM i LIC sees from VIOS vOptical Media from DST before proceeding with Install Operating Systems.

    Hi, for VIOS, you need to load/unload all 5 B_Group volumes one by one. However, with Power-10, USB is supported. You can create a bootable USB and copy all B_Group volumes onto it. Then, boot your LPAR from the USB. After the installation of LIC and when you install all the license programs, it will automatically pick up all the B_Group volumes from the USB without requiring your intervention

    This is no longer true in the past several releases of VIOS. You can create VIOS's Virtual Optical Media and assign all IBM i install image files to the same target IBM i LPAR and it will act like an optical library that allow IBM i to load the needed volume without a need for manual change of each optical media.
