Scheduled start/finish: Auto-populated when assignment added

  • 1.  Scheduled start/finish: Auto-populated when assignment added

When I create a WO and add an assignment, the Scheduled Start and Scheduled Finish fields get automatically populated.

    Questions:

    1. What is the mechanism behind the auto-populating functionality?
    2. Would there be a reason why we would want to automatically populate those fields?

    Thank you.

Assignments have two attributes (SCHEDULEDATE & FINISHDATE) that are supposed to indicate when that assignment is supposed to be started/finished. These update the schedule dates on the work order because the assumption is these dates on the assignment are the most correct and are thus reflective on when the work is actually expected to start and finish. Maximo takes the earliest SCHEDULEDATE & latest FINISHDATE from the assignments and if it's before the scheduled start/after the scheduled finish updates the WO dates to reflect this.

The reason why most organizations would want this is if you're tracking assignments, that's typically what your users are depending on when to do the work. Your planners would be identifying when the work can be done based on a variety of factors (including the technician's availability, part availability, weather, other work needing to be done, etc.) that might be different than the original dates on the WO. You could make them update dates on assignments and the WO but it seems redundant to make them do it manually. Maximo has other dates on the WO (TARGSTARTDATE/TARGCOMPDATE) that would be set via a PM WOGEN for example. I would recommend to view those dates as more rigid but scheduled start/scheduled finish I view as more fluid based on when the work can be done.
