Hi Tom,
Assume LAPTOP is a rotating item. If you have 2 LAPTOPs, then you can tag them LAPTOP 1 and LAPTOP 2 and give serials/barcodes to them to distinguish them as two separate ASSETs.
Now if you have BATTERY as item without rotating tick, that means batteries are identical parts/spares and you do not need to tag / serialize them. They will not be tracked as ASSETs in Maximo, they are just ITEMs.
In short, rotating means that part corresponds to an ITEM and also tracked as an ASSET in Maximo while non-rotating means its only ITEM. I hope it's clear, don't get confused by rotating term. Please see the url below.
