It isn't clear what your requirements are so I'll explain a little bit about navigation paths. It is possible that what you want need is provided for free but without a clearer specification of the requirements I can't provide much more than this. Read this and tell me what other information you need and I'll try to help you out.
You will notice that the identifier of the query item in the navigation path is the same as that of the query item as found in its source query subject. What is happening is that the membership of the query item in the navigation path is an attribute of the query item. It is not a separate object.
When a report is run, if a person clicks on a query item which is part of a navigation group one of the options available to him in the on-demand toolbar will be the navigation through the navigation path. This allows the user to explore in the report even though he is not a report author. The exploration takes place without the overhead and complexity of reporting.
