Cognos Analytics Bursting – File System Distribution
When using bursting in IBM Cognos Analytics to distribute report outputs to different target groups, the file system destination is controlled centrally.
Root Output Directory
In Cognos Configuration, a root directory is defined for file-based report output.
Cognos Analytics can only write files inside this configured root directory. In Cognos Administration, subdirectories can then be created below this root, for example:
C:\CognosOutput\
Germany\
France\
UK\
USA\
These folders can be used as bursting destinations for different regions, departments, customers, or other recipient groups.
Cognos cannot directly use several independent root directories or different drives for this purpose.
Recommended Approach
A reliable architecture is to use a local directory on the Cognos server as the Cognos output root.
Example:
D:\Cognos\BurstOutput\
Cognos generates all burst report files below this directory.
A separate script or scheduled process can then copy or move the generated files to the final network shares:
D:\Cognos\BurstOutput\Germany
→ \\fileserver\reports\Germany
D:\Cognos\BurstOutput\France
→ \\fileserver\reports\France
A simple PowerShell or batch script can be scheduled through Windows Task Scheduler or another enterprise scheduling system.
Why This Approach Is Recommended
Using a local Cognos output directory has an important operational advantage:
The Cognos report generation does not depend directly on the availability of external network drives or file shares.
If a network share is temporarily unavailable, Cognos can still generate and store the burst output locally. The downstream copy process can transfer the files later.
This separates the process into two independent steps:
- Cognos Analytics: generate and burst the reports into local target folders.
- Distribution process: copy or move the generated files to the final recipient directories.
This architecture is generally more robust than configuring the Cognos report generation process to depend directly on remote file systems.
