  • 1.  Replicating a UDFS IASP to another LPAR

    Hello,

    I'm looking to implement a UDFS on an IASP.

    Storage is FS5100 and I will be using the the remote copy feature to replicate the UDFS iASP volumes to a second FS5100 in another DC.

    The system ASP is currently replicated using Mimix. Thousands of IFS files are generated each day so Mimix often has issues coping with the volume of IFS files.

    Is there a way for me to mount the target replicated volumes on to a remote LPAR?

    I'm thinking that PowerHA may be required to set up the IASP configuration in both local and remote LPARs.

    With PowerHA for i (in conjunction with Global/Metro Mirror (or whatever new name it may have by now) in IBM SAN disk), a target IASP that is being replicated CANNOT be mounted for use in the target IBM i LPAR.  You can mount the target IASP only when the Global/Metro Mirror is suspended.

    As far as I can remember about MIMIX, it supports multiple streams of replication to handle high volume of data changes. But you may need to spread the files to multiple directories and make sure you have sufficient bandwidth of the data link.  You should consult the implementer for this.

    I think we're on the same track here.

    Use PowerHA to configure and create the IASP.

    The stop replication to mount on the remote LPAR OR

    Ccreate a snapshot of the volumes on the remote storage and map those to the remote LPAR. No need to stop replication with ths option.

    I would prefer your second method. What you described (point-in-time copy of an IASP) is OK if you do NOT need a near-real-time copy of the data files. The key is to decide what time(s) of day you need the point-in-time copy.

    For your first method, you need to handle a big flush of replication when you resume the replication.

    I forgot to ask if your "remote LPAR" serves only a disaster recovery (DR) purpose in which it is brought to active use only when the source LPAR fails to work?  (I assumed you also actively used your remote LPAR in my previous post  but I then realized you did not say this explicitly.)  If so, you do not need to do volume snapshot. Your first method would suffice.

    Another question is whether you will still continue to use MIMIX to replicate database objects in system ASP after using IASP disk replication just for UDFS part?   If so, this will be a bit too burdensome. It would be better to eliminate MIMIX and move all your application database objects to IASP for disk replication as well.
