Yes, it would, but it still does, at least on my system (29.0.0)

Thank you. I swear to god that RENAME VARIABLE did work in the past. I saw it working many times with my own eyes with older SPSS versions. I guess the ability to abbreviate this command somehow made it possible also to use this malformed version.
Thank you for the insight!

To elaborate further, some old commands, including this one, allow abbreviation, so RENAME VARIABLE or even REN VAR works. This practice was discontinued many years ago, so command introduced since that point do not allow abbreviation, but it is allowed for old ones in order to avoid breaking old syntax.

As far as I know, the command has always been called RENAME VARIABLES. There is nothing in the CSR to suggest otherwise.

Subject: RENAME VARIABLES vs. RENAME VARIABLE
Hello,
We cannot find any information in the documentation when the support for "RENAME VARIABLE" command was dropped, because in the past it was a supported command, but I can only find documentation for "RENAME VARIABLES" now.
Can anyone help out with this information?
Thank you and best regards
