Can I use a characteristic meter in the following fashion-?

I have a bunch of machines that generate failure or error codes. I would like to set up the equipment to send certain codes to Maximo. From what I have read, I’m thinking I can use a characteristic meter to use them to either create a WO, or at least send a request to create one to my team. Is this the best way to do this? Money is tight, looking for a simple, basic solution I can implement.
