It seems that the length of the process ID changed at AIX 5.3 to 6 or 7 characters in length whereas it used to be 5 characters. This breaks a legacy application that uses the process ID to create temporary files. It uses the left-justified 5 characters. Now two processes can have the same 5 left-justified characters of a 6 character ID. Is there any way to limit the length of a process ID to 5 characters? This would no doubt mean limiting the number of available processes, and that's fine on this dedicated machine.
