    This is a partition using virtual disk and ethernet (using a vio server).
    The status on the HMC indicates "Kernel Starting".
    It is a Power6 box, and we are attempting to load AIX 5L v5.3.
    The NIM server is able to install this source on a Power4 system.

    What technology level (TL) of AIX 5.3 are you using? It must at least be TL6 for a POWER6 platform.

    We ran into this same problem. We were using TL5 and couldn't get it to work. Using TL6, the installation worked perfectly.

    The problem has been fixed. We can load from the nim server with no problem once the TL7 was installed on the nim server.

    Just thought I would let you know how it was resolved.
