I downloaded the latest AIX6 install media from 'entitled software' on IBM's site (6100-03-01) and my NIM server (also a p4+ p630, running 6100-03-02-0939). I got AIX6 on the p630 by upgrading the OS using the cdrom.
When I do a NIM install of base OS using rte to the p690 lpar, I get the following results:
NIM install of bos of 5.2 - works fine
NIM install of bos of 5.3 - works fine
CDROM install of bos of 6.1 - works fine
NIM install of bos of 5.1 - hangs on LED 622 (Boot process configuring for operating system installation) NIM redbook indicates control passing to rc.boot
I've tried several iterations of AIX61 levels, and I added ALL software from the AIX6 install media to the AIX61_lpp_source. I then built a spot with this lpp_source, and made sure it was updated with all the software from the 61_lpp_source. I did this thinking that perhaps there were some 'obscure' Power4 filesets that didn't get installed on the first try of creating the lpp_source. Still no luck, still hangs at 622.
I tried using up, mp and 64 for network_kernel, still 0622.
Firmware of the p690 frames, hba's and nics are all at the latest.
I put the spot in debug mode, but after hitting 'g' and the > db prompt, I got LED 607 IFCONFIG FAILED. I haven't tried putting the 5.2 or 5.3 spot to see if I get the same LED 607.
Finally, I set the lpar to do a NIM install of 5.2, and copied the rc.boot file from
/export/spot/TL5300-08-01-5-2008-SPOT/usr/lpp/bos/inst_root/sbin to my home directory, reset the lpar to do a NIM install from 6.1, and copied the rc.boot file in the respective directory. Still have LED 622.
Any changes I need to make for the NIM object of the machine to make it work with AIX61 NIM install? Again, everything works great using AIX61 cdrom media, but unfortunately (for me) I've to do this with NIM so I can get our 'standard' image upgraded to 6.1 and then have that pushed to future p4+ lpars.
I have NOT tried pushing this NIM AIX61 lpp_source and SPOT to a p5 or p6 machine yet, but that's a step I'm working to be able to test shortly.
