    Hello,

I'm curious to know how often others are rebooting their MQ servers or if there is a best practice. IBM states that they do not have a recommendation. Our queue managers are running on AIX and we have always rebooted the servers every Sunday.

    Regards,

    Nate

I have not personally heard of people rebooting their MQ Servers on a routine basis. It certainly isn't necessary from an MQ perspective. I've heard of many MQ users who have had their queue managers running for months. A reboot takes place only when necessary, say to apply maintenance.

Others may have different experiences though.

    Cheers

    Hi Nate,

I'm not aware of any resource-creep or performance degradation issues with leaving MQ Queue Managers running indefinitely. We have hundreds of qmgrs and most are only restarted when necessary for OS patching. I have encountered qmgrs that have been successfully running for years.

Whenever I hear about QMgrs running for years I know there's little chance I'll be hired to perform a security assessment there.  I can count on my fingers the number of MQ Fix Packs over 20+ years that haven't had a single security-relevant fix, and I have less than the average allocation of fingers!  If the QMgrs aren't coming down at least 3 or 4 times a year, maintenance isn't being applied.

    Hi T-Rob,

These are usually on old servers that are no longer in use, but have somehow missed being decommissioned. I agree that this should raise eye brows.

We are actually diligent about MQ version / fixpack currency and patching on our active fleet.
