  • 1.  MQ on IBMi - licensing

    Posted 04/15/26 08:04 AM

    Hi ,

Had a query on MQ on IBMi licensing/renewal. Is 'MQ on IBMi' licensing/renewal only through IBM Passport Advantage or does it also fall under IBM SWMA.

    Dear Thomas

I'm quite sure IBM i SWMA does NOT cover MQ product because MQ is NOT a SW product owned by IBM i team.

    Hi Thomas

It is true, you have to contact IBM or distributor for licensing or renewal outside IBMi SWMA because it is not considered OS and base components. MQ has it's own license and swma.

    Hello Thomas,

MQ is a separate product from IBM i, and is sold through Passport Advantage.  As such, it does have it's own licensing methods and support contract mechanisms that is separate from IBM i SWMA.

You can download MQ PTFs via IBM i SWMA, as they are delivered via the standard PTF process.  (A caution on those PTFs - if you run MQ on your IBM i and other platforms as well, the PTFs can occasionally change the revision of MQ.  Such as moving from 8.1 to 8.2 or 8.3 - which can cause a mismatch with other versions on other platforms. )

    Hi ,

with the renewal , check perhaps if you can utilize sub capacity licencing on IBM MQ on IBM i

    Refer to this : https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-i-workload-groups

You might have a cost optimization that could apply to your environment.
