  • 1.  Model Viewer Gone in SPSS 27?

    Posted Fri December 18, 2020 06:05 PM

Did the Model Viewer option disappear for the non-parametric tests? I tried Edit -> Options -> Output and checking 'Model Viewer' but it mentions 'Output display method applies to: Generalized Linear Mixed Models'. Where can I get it back for the Nonparametric tests?

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

The Model Viewer choice for NPTESTS has indeed disappeared in V27.  There were a number of enhancements to that procedure, but I don't know why that option is no longer available.  I know that MV output was not popular.  I have a question in to Development on this and will post the answer if I get one.

Due to low usage and general user unhappiness with the MV and difficulty in implementing the new NPTEST features into a MV, it was reverted to traditional output only.  If you want to pursue this, you can use the Help > Report an Issue menu item to send a comment.

Thank you Jon for your clear reply. Odd that they didn't simply made the pivot tables the default and keep the Model Viewer as an option in the options menu. I liked the Model Viewer for keeping the many outputs of a test with post-hoc analysis organised and not clutter my output file itself, I hated the model viewer since you couldn't adjust anything in it (e.g. change nr. of decimals).

Anyway, thanks you saved me an endless search for the option.

    Happy and safe holidays.

another thought;  For better control over output organization, you might consider using multiple output windows.  The OUTPUT NEW, OUTPUT NAME, OUTPUT ACTIVATE, OUTPUT SAVE, and OUTPUT CLOSE commands give you syntax control over Viewer windows.  You could route NPTESTS output to a new window and then move anything you want to keep into your main output window.

I think that few users take advantage of this functionality.

thanks for the tip. I've also send a feedback via the help option you suggested.

It's just a small thing, and was a bit surprised for SPSS to get rid of the whole thing, and not just changing the default.

I teach Statistics to students at a university of applied science in the social sciences. For them it is the GUI of SPSS that helps them, since CLI (like the syntax or R) will probably be a bit steep learning curve and they mostly use it to analyse a survey. It would be great if SPSS could have more effect sizes with also the nonparametric tests. Or perhaps even generate output like intellectusstatistics does, but I understand that the target audience for SPSS is different and a lot broader.

I'm glad version 27 at least gave a few new ones. I'm also very happy that the basics don't change and can still use a lot of my instructions from version 19 still in version 27 without the students noticing :-)

Thanks again for your input Mr. Peck.

Good luck.  I haven't tried  intellectusstatistics, but I am skeptical that software like that is actually very helpful in teaching applied statistics, although it may get around some of barriers imposed by things like obscure names for test statistics.  SPSS used to have a Statistical Advisor feature, but I don't think it got much use.

Have you taken advantage of the extension commands implemented in Python or R and available from the Extensions > Extension Hub menu?  While they tend to be for more advanced usages, there are some statistical and graphical ones that could be helpful at an elementary level.

Never used the extensions but know about what they would be able to do. However, if I want to work with Python I just use Python, or for R the same thing :-)

I guess it also depends on what the learning objectives are, on what might be best to use. For my course, the students get a bit of a 'cookbook' on what test to use depending on the measurement level and focus more on properly explaining generic terms like 'significance' and give them an oppertunity to do a basic statistical analysis of their survey. They are not doing any theoretical research or for medicines, so feel we can cut a few corners. Of course I also warn them that we do so, so if they ever go into academic university they will probably notice that I did so. I often tell them that if they do research for a local shop and the survey shows that 90% of the 400 respondents think it stinks in the shop, the owner could argue about the post-hoc method used, or whether or not a normality test should have been used, and if a parametric or non-parametric test should be used, etc. but in the end, I would still do something about the smell in the shop :-)

p.s. haven't used intellectiusstatistics myself either, not sure if I will. The tests they can perform seem very limited at the moment, and indeed even if they have more, still might not use it.
