Eventually it errored out and I rebooted, hangs at the Welcome to aix/bootimage/kernelsize screen and then just sits there, when I boot to the cd again I get only a complete overwrite or a preservation option, no more migration as it says it's current level is 6.1. Any ideas on how I can get back to the migration or fix the migration?

    IBM support says that migrations do not check build dates which means I must have bad media. I had been doing back to back upgrades so the cd must of gone bad while I was switching from the last machine to the current system. So I will download the first cd again. Also since when I boot to the cdrom and view the hard disks they say they are level 6.1, this is why I can't do a migration any more and my only option is to do a preservation install which will destroy currently installed apps.

    I'm open to any outside suggestions.

    The system thinks it is at 6.1 with some filesets at a build date of 0811, the 6.1 fix pack build dates show AIX 6.1 TL01 has build date 0822, so use 6.1 TL01 media and do an update_all.

    If you do not have a 5.3 mksysb - which you should of course - to restore and start again, then ask IBM to assist with continuing the upgrade.

    In my experience going back is not an option, even with failed updates within the same AIX version, but you can usually continue going to the desired, or a later, level with the right assistance.

    I've seen problems like this before and IBM will go a long way to help you out to try and save the system for you if you ask nicely.
