Perhaps the nomenclature is the best in the two applications dealing with messages: Message Tracking and Message Reprocessing. Keep in mind that with every application there is a framework behind the scenes. You always have a list tab and a "details" tab. The "main" tab of the application deals with the main record of the application and displays the details of said record. So with that in mind, the "Details" tab in this case deals not with the message itself but rather the record in Maximo to which that message is attached.
As you note, in the display tab there is an Icon that allows you to view the message. In the details tab you do indeed see the individual message. When you import data through an external system, the large XML imported is split into individual messages. Message tracking shows this. Not sure why you only show one in your list view. Perhaps you only had the single record to process?
The other application which behaves similarly is Message Reprocessing. When message fails to process (usually due to invalid syntax or value designation) you can view the individual messages there and re-edit the message and process the message again (hence the fancy application name!)
